Understanding the link between weight and infertility
As a highly trained reproductive endocrinologist, Mark Rispler MD continues to follow the latest developments in infertility treatments to offer our patients the best chance of pregnancy success. At our Manhattan Beach fertility center, Dr. Rispler addresses common causes of infertility and provides advanced treatment options to our patients. As part of a thorough fertility evaluation, Dr. Rispler will look for any potential issues that may hinder conception, including issues with weight and infertility.
Dr. Rispler explains the weight and infertility connection
Infertility can occur for a variety of reasons, including physical abnormalities, hormonal imbalances and certain medical conditions. Your body weight can also impact your ability to become pregnant. Women who are overweight or underweight can have difficulty conceiving.
Significant variations outside of normal weight ranges can impact your menstrual cycle and disrupt ovulation. During fertility testing, our Manhattan Beach fertility center expert can evaluate whether you may have any issues linked to weight and infertility.
Tips to address concerns about weight and infertility
If Dr. Rispler determines that weight and infertility may be impacting your chances of pregnancy, he may make the following suggestions:
- Calculate your BMI. One measurement of healthy weight is BMI, or body mass index. Generally, a BMI of 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. The internet offers a variety of online BMI calculators to help you determine your BMI.
- Develop a plan. Start with a reasonable goal. If you’re overweight, losing just 5-10% of your weight can have a positive health impact and may improve your odds of becoming pregnant.
- Focus on healthy eating. Make sure to incorporate whole grains, lean proteins and leafy green vegetables into your diet.
- Get active. Adding in mild to moderate exercise can enhance your efforts to lose weight.
