Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Causes of Female Infertility: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, PCOS
If you experience two of the following symptoms, Dr. Rispler and Dr. Berger may diagnose polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as the underlying cause. PCOS Disrupts the Menstrual Cycle and Hormonal Balance and Can Lead to Infertility A hormonal disorder called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) interferes with ovulation and can lead to infertility. Our team aggressively treats PCOS to help women achieve pregnancy and relieve health-threatening symptoms associated with PCOS.
- Irregular ovulation (chronic anovulation)
- Increased male hormones (hyperandrogenism) and/or abnormal hair growth on the chest, stomach, nipples and face
- Enlarged ovaries covered with cysts
Our team understands the devastating impact PCOS can have on a woman. The physical characteristics of increased hair growth, acne and weight gain, coupled with the frustration of infertility, can be difficult to bear.
Facts about PCOS
- PCOS affects 5-10% of women
- Fluid-filled sacs, or cysts, that form on the ovaries can be as small as a pearl or large as a golf ball
- Not all women with PCOS have trouble conceiving
- PCOS can affect teenage girls, but is most often diagnosed in a woman’s 20s and 30s
Health Risks of PCOS
In addition to drug therapy, your doctor may recommend a diet and exercise regimen for women diagnosed with PCOS.
According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, PCOS is linked to metabolic syndrome and abdominal weight gain that can contribute to insulin resistance/diabetes, elevated cholesterol and hypertension. PCOS often leads to a whole host of health problems, including heart disease and the inability to ovulate and get pregnant.
In addition, when the body fails to ovulate each month, the uterus is exposed to unremitting levels of estrogen. This, in turn, increases the risk of uterine cancer.
