Learn about the impact of low sperm count on fertility
Conservative numbers estimate that 1 in 8 couples face infertility. At Innovative Fertility Center, Dr. Mark Rispler and Dr. Joshua J. Berger understands that dealing with infertility can cause you to feel discouraged. Our Manhattan Beach fertility center provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of infertility, including low sperm count.
Male factor infertility basics from our Manhattan Beach fertility center
Although many people believe that infertility only affects women, one-third of cases occur due to male factor infertility. To determine if male factor infertility could be causing issues, our Manhattan Beach fertility center will order a semen analysis. This test looks at various factors of a semen sample, including quantity, shape, motility, pH balance and liquefaction time. If the results show any abnormalities, including low sperm count, we will refer the male partner to a urologist, a physician experienced in the male reproductive system and its functions.
The common causes of a low sperm count
Sperm production involves the brain and reproductive system. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland generate hormones that trigger sperm production in the testes. Then, the sperm travels through delicate tubes, mixes with semen and is ejaculated. Any interruption in this process can interfere with sperm production and create problems. The following may contribute to a low sperm count:
- Physical issues such as blockages
- Infections that impact sperm health or production
- Ejaculatory problems
- Hormone imbalances
- Certain medications
Our Manhattan Beach fertility center can treat low sperm count
Once your doctor identifies low sperm count as an impediment to pregnancy, he will work with you and your partner to develop a customized treatment plan. In some cases, surgery, antibiotic therapy or the use of hormones may correct the issue. When these avenues don’t work, our Manhattan Beach fertility center may look at assisted reproductive technology options, including sperm retrieval, intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
At Innovative Fertility Center, we will complete a thorough fertility evaluation to identify the best treatments for your situation. Your doctor will review your history and look for any hindrances to conception, including low sperm count.
