We can help you figure out when to see a fertility doctor
If you have been struggling to conceive, you are not alone. Approximately 1 in 8 couples deals with infertility problems. Because time is of the essence, Joshua J. Berger MD, PhD wants our patients and their partners to understand when to see a fertility doctor. This knowledge makes it much easier to schedule that first fertility appointment.
A refresher on trying to conceive and when to see a fertility doctor
Many couples believe they will get pregnant soon after they start trying. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way, and seeing a negative test result each month can leave you feeling frustrated.
Generally, most couples will conceive within six months to a year of trying to conceive, so don’t give up hope. However, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), you should consider scheduling a first fertility appointment after 12 months without success. Women over age 35 should consult a fertility expert after trying for six months.
Reasons to consider visiting a fertility specialist
Dr. Berger wants to ensure that our patients are well-informed about infertility testing and treatment. While the ASRM guidelines offer solid advice on when to see a fertility doctor, additional factors may also affect your decision to explore infertility testing.
You may want to make an appointment with a fertility specialist in the following cases.
- History of PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids or other uterine abnormalities
- Recurrent pregnancy loss, which is at least two miscarriages
- History of irregular menstrual cycles
- Family history of early menopause or premature ovarian failure
- Known genetic condition that could affect the ability to conceive
- History of chemotherapy or other treatments that can permanently affect fertility
