How gender selection works

In the past, couples wishing to add a daughter to their household of boys had to roll the dice and hope for a girl. Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) now enables us to determine the sex of the embryo before he performs the transfer, allowing him to place only embryos of the desired sex into the uterus.

The gender of any offspring is determined by the chromosomes from the male partner. A woman’s eggs have two X chromosomes, while a man’s sperm carries X and Y chromosomes, so consequently:

• If a man’s sperm carries a Y chromosome and fertilizes the egg, the baby will be a boy.
• If a man’s sperm carries an X chromosome and fertilizes the egg, the baby will be a girl.
