Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

How we support women after recurrent pregnancy loss

The team at our Manhattan Beach fertility clinic helps many women move past recurrent pregnancy loss and fulfill their dream of motherhood. Specialists define this type of pregnancy loss as two or more miscarriages before 20 weeks of gestation. While this is a heartbreaking experience that makes some women feel hopeless, comprehensive testing and effective fertility treatments can help them go on to have a healthy baby.

Evaluations after recurrent pregnancy loss

When a woman has had numerous miscarriages, Mark Rispler MD or Joshua J. Berger MD, PhD evaluate the records from her past pregnancies and miscarriages to determine whether there is any information that can help when designing a treatment plan. After this evaluation, he will likely recommend certain tests that can help determine why the patient has had recurrent pregnancy loss.

Genetic screeningAs chromosomal abnormalities and other genetic conditions can cause a miscarriage, this simple type of testing can be incredibly helpful.

Blood testsAn analysis of the patient’s blood can reveal issues with her immune system or hormone levels. It can also detect problems like autoantibodies, blood clotting complications, pelvic inflammatory disease and sexually transmitted diseases.

Pelvic ultrasound. Ultrasounds allow us to assess the health of the patient’s reproductive organs and detect uterine fibroids, polyps and other uterine challenges.

Saline sono-hysterogram / Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)These ultrasound and radiology procedures can reveal the health of a woman’s fallopian tubes and determine whether the uterus is free of issues that could prevent implantation.

Endometrial biopsy. A small biopsy of the uterine lining helps us determine whether the lining is able to support a healthy pregnancy.

If the woman needs more extensive testing for recurrent pregnancy loss, our Manhattan Beach fertility clinic team will rarely recommend a surgical evaluation of infertility.

Effective fertility treatments to overcome multiple miscarriages

After a doctor evaluates the results of the patient’s tests, he works with them to create a treatment plan for recurrent pregnancy loss. There are numerous fertility treatments that can be incredibly effective.

IVF with PGT-A. To ensure the doctor transfers a healthy embryo to the woman’s uterus during in vitro fertilization (IVF), we sometimes recommend preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A). This test helps the embryologist determine which embryos are chromosomally normal.

Hysteroscopy. This minimally invasive procedure allows doctors to correct uterine issues like fibroids, polyps, scar tissue and other conditions that might be causing the miscarriages.

Medications for excess blood clotting. If autoimmune problems are causing the pregnancy issues, doctors might recommend medications such as aspirin and heparin.

Medications for a hormonal imbalance. Doctors can often prescribe medications to help correct thyroid problems, uncontrolled diabetes, elevated prolactin and other hormonal issues that can affect pregnancy.

The knowledgeable team at our Manhattan Beach fertility clinic makes it their top priority to help women overcome fertility challenges so that they can build their family.
